TripIt data show one-third of Memorial Day’s 2022 weekend flights abroad – TripIt Blog

[ad_1]

The start of the summer travel season in the United States, better known as Memorial Day weekend, is always a busy holiday. And despite rising prices, our data shows that this year will be as busy as ever.

TripIt reviewed U.S. flight, car rental, lodging, and vacation rental bookings made by our TripIt users for Memorial Day weekend 2022 and compared the findings with the equivalent booking period. in 2021.

We found that whether it was due to the lifting of the mask mandate, the drop in COVID-19 infection rates, or simply the spring fever, travelers will come out in revenge. All the categories we have analyzed show significant increases compared to last year’s volume, although some more than others. International travel will experience the largest increase, by far, with nearly a third of all travelers going abroad and an increase close to 500 percent compared to last year. Memorial Day weekend 2022 seems to be the official start of summer and the unofficial return of international holidays.

The unofficial return of the international holidays

Apparently, all recent vacations have been busier than previous ones, and airport security check numbers continue to break pandemic-era records. Memorial Day 2022 will not stray from this trend.

We hope that the busiest airports are:

  1. San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  2. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  3. Denver International Airport (DEN)
  4. Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
  5. John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  6. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
  7. Dallas / Fort Worth International Airport (DWF)
  8. Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
  9. Hartsfield – Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  10. Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

Those departing from these airports should have extra time to pass security, especially if their flight is on Friday (27/5), the busiest day for departures, or Thursday (26/5), when also they will come out almost the same amount. For the five most popular airports, the busiest times for departures (and when you should be very careful to allow extra time) will be:

Although flights in general increased more than 2.5 times, the biggest surprise of the data from this holiday is that one third of the flights are to international destinations, a dramatic increase over last year, when less than one-fifth of flights flew out of the United States. While the test requirements are still in place for travelers entering the United States from abroad, it appears that other lifting restrictions and open borders are driving the impressive long-term return. -transport flights. Top 25 international destinations include London (No. 5), Paris (No. 13), Cancun (No. 14) and Dublin (No. 25).

Of the remaining domestic flights, almost a third are to destinations in California (15%), Florida (12%) or New York (6%).

Rising gas prices will not stop the popularity of road travel

Rising gas prices will not slow the demand for car rentals for Memorial Day weekend. With almost a 200% increase in volume compared to 2021, rental cars remain the favorite of pandemic-era travel. Similar to previous vacation travel periods, nearly one-third of car rentals have been booked in California (13%), Florida (10%), and Hawaii (8%). And while it looks like drivers are looking for sun, they also seem to be opting for big cities like Denver, San Francisco, Boston, Los Angeles, Dallas and Seattle, which saw an increase in ranking, compared to beach destinations like Honolulu. , Lihue, Kailua-Kona, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Fort Myers, all of which declined in the rankings.

Travelers take a big bite of La Gran Poma

While hotels and holiday rentals experienced the smallest increase in volume compared to last year, they nevertheless experienced impressive increases of 184% and 134% respectively.

Big cities continue to call it a comeback, with New York City regaining its number one spot for hotels, and New York (No. 3) and Brooklyn (No. 10) are also making massive leaps for vacation rentals. . Other major cities such as Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver and Portland also remained on both lists. Meanwhile, the top 25 vacation rentals also saw outdoor adventure destinations remain, such as Bend, OR, Moab, UT and Sedona, AZ.

Indianapolis will see people return to the Indy 500, rising 16 places from number 31 to number 15 for hotels and 18 places from number 40 to number 22 for vacation rentals.

Yellowstone is still a hot spot for hotels, perhaps thanks to the popular TV show. After setting records last year, Yellowstone appeared on the list of the top 25 to stay at number 25 this year.

Miami Beach (# 11), Savannah (# 12) and Nashville (# 13) are also new arrivals to this year’s top 25 vacation rentals. Maybe as a popular place for bachelor parties and rescheduled bachelor parties?
