The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, also popularly known as the Great Mayan Reef or Great Maya Reef, is a marine region that stretches over 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) from Isla Contoy at the tip of the Yucatán Peninsula down to Belize, Guatemala and the Bay Islands of Honduras. The reef system includes various protected areas and parks including the Belize Barrier Reef, Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, Hol Chan Marine Reserve (Belize), Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve, and the Cayos Cochinos Marine Park. Belize’s coastline, including the Belize Barrier Reef, is home to approximately 30% of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. The reef system is home to more than 65 species of stony coral, 350 species of mollusk and more than 500 species of fish.

We have a privileged location, being in front of the second largest reef in the world, home to colorful fish and coral formations that stand out and you can see easily. In our Snorkeling tour through the reef of Puerto Morelos, you will see a lot of marine life from parrot fish, to sea turtles and if you are lucky, you will see some giant rays.

Our Snorkeling tour in the coral reef of Puerto Morelos takes place in the Arrecife National Park. It is declared a protected natural area, and it is recognized as a reef national park in Puerto Morelos. The reef has a depth of approximately 2 meters high, you swim among the corals and closely admire the marine species that inhabit the reef, such a goldfish, manta rays and even turtles.

The snorkeling tour lasts 2 hours during which you will visit two locations in the coral reef for about 45 minutes with more than enough time to see hundreds of marine species.

How to get to Puerto Morelos?

Puerto Morelos is at the heart of Riviera Maya, half way between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. By car, it takes about 35 minutes from either town. After leaving federal route 307, drive the 1.5 remaining miles to reach the village and park near the centre. We can also include the transportation in the tour if you are staying in Cancun or Playa del Carmen.
