Isla Mujeres is a popular destination in Mexico. Both people who come on holiday and those who take a side trip to visit this charming island want to see all that it has to offer. So how can you get to Isla Mujeres better? Which ferries are the best? How can you move around Isla Mujeres? Well, there are several options and some tips that we will explain below.
How to get to Isla Mujeres from Cancun airport
If you want to fly to Cancun airport and stay in Isla Mujeres, you want to get to Isla Mujeres as efficiently as possible to start your vacation. There are four options that we will describe below.
1. Make a private transfer (more recommended).
We recommend this option for several reasons. You can book a private transfer just for you and for all those who travel with you and will be waiting for you at the airport. In addition to speed and ease, you will also get a discount when booking a round trip, something you cannot get with a taxi ride. Private transfers are also fixed price for destinations, airport taxis have no meters or fixed prices.

2. Take the ADO bus
The only public transportation from Cancun Airport is the ADO bus company. Large buses serve each of Cancun’s four airport terminals. If you choose this option, you will look for directions to ADO bus to Cancun. Buses run every 30 minutes and take about 40 minutes to reach the ADO bus station in central Cancun. From the ADO bus station you have two options to get to the Isla Mujeres ferry. The first option is to take a taxi to Puerto Juárez, which is the closest and best railroad to go. It is just over 4 km away and about an 8-minute drive to the ferry. The second option is to leave the bus station and cross Tulum Avenue to get a collective van to Puerto Juárez. This saves a few bucks and is the cheapest option, but we do not recommend it. On the one hand, you have to wait for a van and, if you have more than one small backpack, there is not much space in the vans for luggage.
3. Taxi
It is possible to take a taxi from Cancun Airport to Puerto Juárez, but it is likely to cost more. Cancun airport taxis are not measured and there is no taxi rank to book a taxi. There are no fixed rates from Cancun Airport. The other disadvantage of taking a taxi is the discount lost when booking a private transfer.
4. Rent a car
For most people, it doesn’t make much sense to rent a car and go to Isla Mujeres by car or park it and take the ferry. It only makes sense if you take the car to the Punta Sam ferry. Isla Mujeres is a small island and most people use golf carts and taxis to get around. Only if you are staying for a while and staying at the southern end of the island would it be helpful to have a car.
How to get to Isla Mujeres for a day trip from the Riviera Maya
If you want to enjoy the beaches of Isla Mujeres, it is close to the day. So how do you get to Isla Mujeres from the Riviera Maya? For most people, you will come from Playa del Carmen. Between Platja del Carme and Cancún there are groups. These are small minivans that go up and down the road making stops. Three are also Playa Express, which has larger vans and a slightly nicer service. For more information on how to catch the collectives and Playa Express, check out our article here.
Another option is the ADO bus. These are large, air-conditioned buses that provide you with more space. It takes about 10 minutes longer than the rest of the services. The ADO bus goes to Cancun Bus Station, where you can take a collective taxi or minivan to Puerto Juarez.
By car to Cancun and taking the ferry to Isla Mujeres
If you want to drive to Cancun to catch the ferry, Puerto Juárez is the place to go. This is the most popular crossing and is also cheaper. Be sure to bring a Qroo ID if you have one, you will get a discount.
Now, where to park. There is a large garage in Puerto Juárez. It is prefect because it is literally connected to the ferry dock. However, it can fill up on weekends. There are two smaller car parks just before reaching the Puerto Juárez pier. They are a bit cheaper, but park outside with little shade.

The main garage is the car park closest to the ferries. There are also smaller car parks before reaching the pier.

It depends on where you come from and if you take a car. For most people, you’ll want to leave from the Puerto Juarez ferry crossing. It is easier to get to from Cancun Airport and the Riviera Maya. It is also cheaper to cross with this ferry.

Get off the ferry and move around Isla Mujeres
Once you’ve figured out how to get to Isla Mujeres and what ferry you take, you’ll want to get where you want to go on the island. Most people come by day or stay for a while, mostly in the far north. This is where the main town and the two most popular beaches on the island are located. Most of the time, walking is the best option as the area is quite small.
If you have luggage, taxis are available at the ferry dock and at the taxi rank next to the port. Most places cost between $ 4 and $ 5 for a taxi. There is a bus service to the island, but this is not the best option if you have luggage. The bus is more to get from one end of the island to the other and is not a good choice from the ferry pier to beaches or hotels in the downtown area.
