Cenote Xcajum is a cenote near Chichen Itza that is becoming better known. It is an open cenote that has iconic balconies that look out over the cenote from the carved staircase that leads to the water. It is a photogenic cenote and a nice place to swim. In recent years, it has increased in popularity thanks to some Instagram and Tik Tok videos.
What makes this cenote different?
As you move towards the center of the peninsula, the height of the terrain relative to the groundwater is greater. Therefore, the cenotes are “deeper.” When a cenote roof falls, making it an open cenote, the water is usually a little greenish because more organic matter and photosynthesis from the sun fall into it.
This cenote is large and has a lot of green vegetation around it, some of which hangs on the walls, which makes it feel very lush. Once you are in the water swimming, you find yourself in another world.
A ladder was cut into the solid rock that descended into the water. That in itself is awesome. While there are other cenotes that have done this, this one is a little more iconic for the balconies that appear on the cenote wall on several levels, giving people a glimpse of the cenote.
For people with disabilities, there is a ramp to the edge of the cenote to look at, but there is nothing else to access the water.
Services at the cenote
When you arrive, you can change in the changing rooms, rinse in the outdoor showers and use the wardrobes. There are also bathrooms.
The Cenote Xcajum buffet
If you arrive with a bus tour, you may include the buffet on your visit. If you visit independently, you can buy a package combined with buffet. There are not many options in this area to eat other than going to the track or near Chichen Itza.
The buffet offers local dishes and fruit desserts. The buffet is basic, but better than some of the others near Chichen Itza, where the buses stop. Drinks are extra and include soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.
Tourist shopping
At the entrance to the cenote park you will pass by many memories. Most of which are low cost souvenirs that you will find in many locations. You won’t find really handmade items, you may find something that is a good gift for someone back home. If you arrive with a bus tour, you can reach something you have not seen in your hotel. If you drive here, you will find better quality items throughout your trip.
