Cancun Airport surpasses pre-pandemic numbers

September was a month for the Cancun International Airport, during the summer holidays, Cancun airport broke air traffic records. The tourism sector in Mexico is still recovering from COVID-19 disease, although passenger levels have exceeded pre-pandemic figures according to an announcement made by ASUR.

The airline has reported that it carried 1.66 million passengers in September 2021, an increase of 4.4% compared to September 2019.

There is great potential for passenger levels at Cancun Airport this year to exceed the total number of visitors in 2019, according to the latest air traffic reports. In addition, Mexico is not requesting a mandatory quarantine, nor a negative covert test to enter Mexico that has contributed to more visitors deciding to choose Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

According to the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council, CPTQ and the National Migration Institute, INM, revealed that 38% more U.S. travelers arrived in the Mexican Caribbean this year than in 2019.
