The most awaited Xcaret-Cozumel-Xcaret crossing in years

A renewed cosmos for all canoeists

At last we were able to live the long-awaited Travesía Sagrada Maya edition 2022 and it was as magical and refreshing as we expected. After a two-year break due to a pandemic and a week’s delay due to bad weather, the canoeists of Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel were finally able to row this ancestral crossing again.

Estonian Xcaret eventfor those who are not very familiar, it is a cross that goes from year to year in May from Xcaret to Cozumel and back with the intention of rescuing a tradition of the ancient Maya in which the goddess Ixchel is worshiped.

You can read all about this here: The raison d’être of the Sacred Mayan Crossing

Now let’s start with the best moments of the Travesía Sagrada Maya 2022

1.- The energy of preparation to leave from 4am

That hour when hundreds of canoeists are ready to go out has unparalleled energy. You turn around and go to a group helping yourself to paint, others meditating, others dancing with emotion, some arranging all the things of their team so that everything is ready, all with the emotion in the flower of skin because they are in a few minutes to start the Mayan Sargada Crossing.

2.- The Mayan drums and the smell of copal begin to sound

While the canoeists are getting ready, on Xcaret beach, the spectators gather to say goodbye to their brave family and friends and wish them all the best in every row. Drums and live music begin to be heard, the smell of copal floods the beaches and with them a beautiful Mayan ceremony.

3.- A dance show telling the story of the goddess Ixchel

Minutes before the long-awaited departure of the canoeists, several groups of local artists present the Mayan traditions that used to take place in this same place, but hundreds of years ago, on pilgrimages from Puerto de Polé to Cuzamil.

It’s a big job that wouldn’t be possible without the hundreds of volunteers from the local community of Playa del Carmen, the Maya area and Cozumel who play wind deities, village women, priests, merchants and even the goddess Ixchel herself.

4.- The reunion of the canoeists with the sea of Xcaret

The most awaited moment has come, imagine hundreds of people united in one feeling: wish the canoeists better on their journey. You hear screams of excitement, applause, clubs and all the good energy you can imagine on a beach at dawn. Little by little, the canoeists go up to their canoes and to the rhythm of the drums they go out to Cozumel to take their offerings to the goddess Ixchel.

5.- On the horizon of Cozumel, is Alcanzan and the first canoes

After hours and hours of rowing with all their might across the Caribbean Sea, the first canoes will reach their destination and be seen from the shores of Chankanaab. Accompanied by drums and many clubs from the community of Cozumel, the brave canoeists disembark full of excitement and tears to celebrate that they succeeded. As more and more canoes approached on the horizon and the feeling of pride I grew up with them.

6.- Offerings for the goddess Ixchel in Cuzamil

This is, for many of the canoeists, the most important moment of the entire Sacred Mayan Crossing. There are hundreds of stories in which we see that the veneration of the goddess Ixchel has brought blessings to their lives. Everyone has their reasons for rowing to Cozumel to see her, some to ask for support, others to thank her, others as a promise to have accomplished something, but that it is real, it certainly is.

7.- Renovated and ready to return to Xcaret

The next day, after receiving the message from Ixchel and with the forces reloaded, the canoeists set out to complete the second and final rowing of the voyage, to Xcaret. The community in Cozumel is gathering in Chankanaab to say goodbye to them and wish them a good tide accompanied by dances, live music and copal ceremonies.

8.- The last one and we’re leaving: paddling at full speed

For the canoeists, the return to Xcaret is special because despite coming with the physical fatigue of having paddled for about 7 hours to Cozumel the day before, they draw energy from parts of their body and soul that they do not know. The strength they feel reborn when they see that they are near the entrance of Xcaret fills them with an intense adrenaline where they leave everything, there is pain, but full of unparalleled satisfaction.

Imagine this feeling multiplied by more than 300 canoeists at the same time …

9.- The most awaited wait in Xcaret

As the canoes paddle, the beaches of Xcaret are filled with people eager to get back to their questions. You can spend hours waiting for this to happen and waiting for you to hear beatings, screams of excitement and joy filling the place with unparalleled energy. New pre-Hispanic dances, Mayan ceremonies and music accompany this longed-for moment.

10.- The canoeists have arrived! Everyone crying with emotion

The first canoe arrived and with it a heavy rain that intensified the emotions of all involved, hundreds of people were heard screaming with emotion even though it was almost impossible to see a detail of what was happening. One by one they reached the canoes to Xcaret beach and filled the park with joy and pride with their renewed cosmos energy and spiritual healing.

Each Sagrada Maya Crossing is different and special in its own way, this one of 2022 we have definitely left with the emotion in full bloom as we will see the reunion of so many canoeists with the sea of Xcaret after the difficult times of pandemic, it was something renovator for everyone. .
