The mariachi is one of the highest cultural expressions in Mexico
Learn more about this incredible tradition that is already part of the culture of humanity.
There is no Mexican who does not know the music of mariachi. There are very few who do not sing accompanying the classic songs and other issues that have encouraged to perform a serenade to their most desired person. When you get to the party, it’s time to enjoy the music, sing, dance and throw in some tequila. Not all celebrations feature mariachi, only the most special ones. We do not serenade everyone, only the most special person. Why is it the quintessential Mexican symbol? Here we tell you!
Cocula, Jalisco, was the birthplace of mariachi as we know it today. It is the result of cultural interbreeding that can only occur in Mexico, it is the mixture of indigenous, Spanish and African culture. The dream of the mariachi arose as an expression of adoration for the Virgin of the Pile, so it is an imitation of the music that the fragile used for this purpose.
To the sound used by the friars with guitars and violins, were added the snails, teponaztlis, flutes and other indigenous instruments that were the spark that originated what is today the best known Mexican musical genre in the world.
It was in the late seventeenth century when the natives created the vihuela and guitarrón, which was adding personality and uniqueness to the nascent genre. However, it was not until the 19th century that various mariachi groups, popular for playing at parties and celebrations in Cocula, began to arrive in Mexico City. Even so, a very important historical fact was needed for its popularity to be catapulted: the Mexican Revolution.
Before the Revolution, during the Porfiriat, the culture in Mexico had a fascination for all the French, reason why this musical sort was seen like a taste of the town, of the “populacha”. After the Mexican Revolution, this genre filled the new society with identity and reached every corner of the country, filling society with nationalist pride.
For the beginning of century XX when the mariachi of Cirilo Marmolejo introduced like “uniform” the charro suit. It was so well received that the idea became popular and soon all mariachi groups wore charro costumes. This same grouping was commissioned to include the sound of the trumpet in their compositions.
An element is still needed for the mariachi to be placed at the top of Mexican culture. This happened when President Lázaro Cárdenas went on tour around the country in the company of Mariachi Vargas de Tecatitlán. The rest is history. Today the mariachi reaches the world as the greatest cultural exponent of Mexico. In places as physically and culturally distant as Japan and South Africa, you can find ensembles dedicated to playing mariachi songs, singing their versions in their local language.
Mexico is proudly the creator of mariachi!
The Mariachi for Mexicans
When there’s a mariachi at parties, it means it’s not just any casual celebration or gathering. What the mariachi gets to sing means that it is an important reception that we have been recording for many years. For Mexicans, it means celebration, pride, passion and a nationalism that we celebrate on Independence Day and every time the mariachi begins to play.
Whether it’s the excitement of singing El Rey or the memory of an old love and singing “Urge” or just dancing and having fun with “El Mariachi Loco”. The mariachi has a wide variety of musical pieces that took us into a very “Mexican” state in which the screams of Viva Mexico and national pride are felt vibrating in the skin and throats.
We love mariachi! And whoever says no, it’s because he needs a couple of tequilas to get warm and let his throat go “barefoot.”
How to enjoy it?
If you are not from Mexico, here I leave you with a simple guide to enjoy mariachi like any Mexican. For starters, if there is a Mexican in your party, the process will be easier, because in your DNA is already coded how to put together a good party with mariachi. If there isn’t a Mexican, get ready to be the honorary Mexican.
The first thing to do is identify when the party is. If it’s too early and I get the mariachi, I probably don’t have enough energy to enjoy it. Conversely, if it is too late, no one will pay attention to it. We must find a midpoint where guests are already dancing, active and enjoying the party, but alcohol does not yet affect anyone.
The next thing is to start with the indicated songs. For this, just tell the character that you like your needs the most. Do you want songs for lovelessness or for dancing, how about dedicating it to your love? Tell the mariachi he mood in what you are, they will take care of the rest.
Don’t forget to have tequila and a few beers on hand. Tell the legend that in mariachi are recorded the songs of the mariachi and once the baby, magically appear in your memory to sing with the soul.
On the other hand, if you are visiting Mexico and want to live the experience, Xcaret and Xoximilco are two great places to enjoy the music of these groups. In Xoximilco live the authentic Mexican party, with tequila and delicious typical food. In addition, they will have musical accompaniment to the beloved mariachi and other regional genres such as northern, jarana and more.
In Xcaret you will end up with the mariachi performing popular songs to the sound of the guitar, the trumpet, the guitar and all its classical instruments. Don’t miss it at the Equestrian Show, as well as at Xcaret México Espectacular!
