Good news! Some parts of the Riviera Maya are green for Covid-19

Quintana Roo traffic light

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Mexico has instituted a system of traffic lights for each state and region. The traffic light has four levels, red, that is, the most severe restrictions, orange-slightly less restrictive but high, yellow-caution, green-the least restrictive. Each state sets the traffic light configuration based on the number of people in the hospital, new cases, and general Covid-19 conditions. Since June 2020, when parts of the Riviera Maya opened, so far we have not reached the green light.

Normally, the governor makes an announcement for the following week. You can see the ads on Carlos Joaquin’s Facebook page here. The new green level will take effect from 11 to 17 October. (It is usually weekly and will most likely stay green unless there are major infections). Basically, from Tulum to Isla Mujeres it is in green and the southern half of the state of Quintana Roo is in yellow.

What does this mean for tourists and locals?

These are some of the highlights of what will change from next week.

  • Essential services operate at normal capacity. These are banks, laundries, supermarkets and schools.
  • Open with 85% capacity, there are places like administrative jobs and accounting services
  • Open to 80% capacity are conventions, outdoor fairs and exhibitions. In closed areas. is 60% occupancy. Gymnasiums and outdoor sports clubs are allowed 80% capacity and enclosed spaces 60% occupancy.
  • Open to 80% of capacity there are also historical sites, tourist services, golf courses, restaurants, shopping malls, theaters and hotels.
  • Casinos are 60% open.
  • Bars, nightclubs and nightlife venues are 50% open.
  • The capacity of public transport is 1 person per motorcycle, 3 people in taxi including driver, private vehicles 4 people and 80% of public transport.

Moving forward

This is a good sign that things are moving forward. Safety protocols still need to be followed to continue on a path to full recovery. In general, Mexico is about a month from the United States and the delta variant spread. Now we’re just watching the United States move above the peak now. Mexico has vaccinated its citizens and residents at a decent rate. Currently, the population 18 years of age or older is available to receive the vaccine. The population of Mexico is young and this has an impact on how the covid-19 virus affects the population. For example, the average age in the United States is 38.1 years. In Mexico the average age is 29.2 years and in the state of Quintana Roo is 26 years.

Because the population is younger on the Riviera Maya, many people have mild infections but continue to work or take a few days off. Therefore, it is important to get vaccinated if possible and maintain health standards to protect one’s own health and that of others. All of this will help minimize the virus and help everyone travel back more freely.

We look forward to a very busy travel season this winter. As we mentioned here in our most recent article on tips for the 2021/22 winter season. If you plan to come, be sure to book in advance as it will be a busy time.
