Many claim that construction in some areas is tearing through valuable undiscovered Mayan archaeological sites, destroying pieces of Mexico&#8217;s cultural heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of these caves were also sacred sites for the Mayan civilization and could also be valuable archaeological sites.  Others have highlighted the destruction of tropical forest areas in the region. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mexican government is often accused of cutting the boundaries for financial gain, and it appears to have scrambled to avoid other obstacles by declaring the project a &#8220;National Security Project.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite these accusations, the government&#8217;s official site on the Maya Train shows that it held a public consultation with various indigenous groups and environmental specialists about the project before it began.
