11 Mexican animals in danger of extinction

Get to know the Mexican species

They are about to disappear from the planet

Since our species emerged from the African savannah and began to conquer the world, its presence has meant devastation and extinction for other species. Thousands of years ago we ended up with large mammals such as mammoths, lazy giants, saber tigers and many more species.

It is understood that as soon as man reached some territory, he was accompanied by the extinction of many animals. It is part of evolution, it is part of development, without embargo, today, it is in our hands to be more aware of the consequences that our presence brings in order to do something about it. We must care for and be more responsible towards the species with which we share our home.

Thanks to the incredible variation of ecosystems that exist in Mexico, we enjoy an enviable biodiversity. However, this should only make us more concerned and more responsible for them. The first step to doing something about it is known for endangered species. That’s why here we tell you a little more about the species that are on the verge of extinction and that are endemic to Mexico.

Daniel Lombraña González

An amphibian that lives in the canals of Xochimilco. Their name is axolotl, but the language has evolved to how we know them today. This curious animal has attracted the attention of scientists because it is the only vertebrate that has the ability to regenerate its limbs when they lose them. Their regenerative capacity is impressive, they can even recover their spinal medicine after an injury and function again as if nothing had happened.

Its natural habitat is in the middle of one of the largest and most populous cities in the world, so it is in danger of disappearing completely due to poor planning and awareness of this living being. It can only live naturally in the canals of Xochimilco, in Mexico City, so it is very important to care for and maintain its habitat.

Jaguar - Endangered Animals
Martinus Scriblerus

One of the most beautiful animals that inhabit the earth. This large feline has been used by the Maya as the highest distinction for their warriors. It is a strong, imposing animal, with a beautiful, agile and incredible skin. These same features make them one of the main targets of poachers.

In addition to hunters, it is endangered by declining habitat and lack of food due to overgrowth and over occupation of cities. This animal lives in the jungles of the south of the country, which are still consumed by the felling of trees and the growth of cities such as Tulum, Cancun, Puerto Morelos and many others who prefer to continue building hotels to attract international tourism before caring for its remains. . Naturals.

Mexican wolf

Antonio Bello

This species of wolf is the smallest in size inhabited in northern Mexico. It is a canine of nocturnal habits that lives in deserts, semi-arid zones and forests of Mexico, occupying an ample territory of the country.

The threat to their existence comes as a result of hunting for their food, which are deer, sheep, antelopes, hares and rodents. By reducing the number of prey, he began to attack the cattle, which caused the winners to start hunting, declining in significant numbers in their population.

Today, the Mexican government is conducting major animal awareness and care campaigns. By 1950 he had even disappeared into his wild state! It has been thanks to these efforts that in 2012 we already inhabited around 75 specimens and for 2014 saw the first birth of a wolf in its natural state. We are on the right track! However, much remains to be done to get this important wolf back to its rightful place.

Black bear

Black Bear | Endangered animals
Gerald Rozemeijer

The black bear inhabits from northern Mexico to Alaska. It survives in cold, temperate or semi-arid climate habitats, making it easy to adapt. However, poaching and fragmentation of its habitat have led to a reduction in its population by 80% in just 25 years.

Human practices are directly related to the decline of this species. In the United States, dumpsters have caused a change in bear behavior, as they associate that they are a source of food, so they approach areas populated by humans, entering homes and causing their hunting.

Currently, the actions being carried out in the three countries involved are not enough. Studies are still being conducted to conclude what are the best actions to stop its disappearance and prevent its extinction.

Marina de Vaquita

Vaquita Marina | Endangered animals

This is one of the species that has been the focus of public attention due to the critical situation in which its species finds itself. However, despite all the attention and measures we have known, its condition does not change and remains in serious danger of extinction.

The main threat to the sea cow is fishing nets. Many of the laslas are trapped, without being the main target, but when they fall into the nets, they die.

The protection of this animal has become complicated over the years, as in China the demand for totoaba fish arose. In these traps, the marine cow falls.

This species lives in the Gulf of Mexico. Our government has been in charge of conducting maritime, land and air patrols, as well as inspection posts for fishing boats. The road is still long, the fight against poaching must be more severe.

Red macaw

Red Macaw | Endangered animals

This beautiful bird is native to Central and South America. It lives in the jungles of southern Mexico and is a very long-lived bird, reaching up to 50 years in captivity and 40 years in the wild. Once again, illegal hunting is the main threat to this species, as well as the decline of its natural habitat.

In Mexico, there are protected areas for red macaw and there is the Xcaret conservation program, which is responsible for reintroducing examples to wildlife. First program has already achieved wildlife births.

Ocelote | Endangered animals
Gerald Rozemeije

The ocelot is like a jaguar as a child. It extends from the southern United States to Brazil and Paraguay. In spite of its ample habitat, it is in danger of extinction by the presence of the human being.

Illegal trade, habitat destruction and poaching are the main causes that are in danger of extinction. There are associations that will take care of its protection and have managed to lessen the threat of this species, but we need to do even more to protect it.

Manatí | Endangered Animals

The Caribbean manatee is in danger of extinction due to human expansion that has radically diminished its habitat. One of its last shrines is in Guatemala.

Another of their threats is that they ingest toxic or metallic substances mixed in the vegetables they eat, hunting and motor injuries.

Quetzal | Endangered animals
Mike Pulido

This is a sacred bird. The Maya and Mexicas considered it a divine manifestation. Its name comes from the Nahuatl quetzalli, which means beautiful, beautiful or sacred.

In pre-Hispanic Mexico, the feathers of this bird were considered a valuable currency, however, it was not hunted. Their feathers were removed after the breeding season and then released. At that time, killing a quetzal was considered a crime and deserved the death penalty.

This bird currently lives in the south of the country. Due to illegal hunting, the population has declined dramatically. Recently, it is considered that it was impossible to reproduce quetzales in captivity, which complicates its conservation. However, in 2018 a baby was obtained, which changes the perspective of this beautiful animal.

Tapir | Endangered animals
Michael Smith

The Central American tapir is also a victim of habitat reduction and overhunting. This curious animal is also known as the forearm, it is believed to have been a mixture between the donkey and the cushion. It inhabits cloud forests and mangroves in the rainforests.

Its main threats are large cats, however, the human being is the one who threatens their existence.

Cozumel raccoon

Raccoon of Cozumel | Endangered animals

This species is critically endangered. It is endemic to Mexico and has the important function of dispersing the seeds of the fruits with which they feed. For this reason they can cause damage to crops, so it is hunted and poisoned. They are also persecuted for their skin, as it is traded with it even though its value is not very high.

It only has a small protected area on the island of Cozumel, so the actions we need to take care of it are not enough.

As you can see, the main threat of all these species is the human being himself. Our most daily activities represent a serious impact on theirs. Let us be more aware of our housemates, we record that the planet belongs to all the living things we inhabit on it.

Fortunately, there are private and public initiatives that will be responsible for conserving and caring for all species that are in danger of extinction. Today, zoos function as shelters for endangered species. These will be supported by research that will then be shared with the scientific community so that, worldwide, we can work to save some species, such as Xcaret Park and its Red Macaw conservation program, which has already achieved its reintegration. of natural habitat and, in fact, the first chick in the nature was already born.

Did you have any practice to protect our planet? Leave us in the comments so we can all apply them.
